New Year’s Resolutions

It’s that time of year again where we look back on our lives and decide what we want to change.

The custom of New Year’s resolutions date back 4,000 years to the ancient Babylonians. They would make promises to their gods to pay their debts and return anything that they had borrowed. In return for keeping their promises their gods would bestow their favor on them in the new year. Around 46 BC Julius Caesar changed the start of the new year from March, when the crops were planted to January 1. January was named for the Roman God Janus who the Romans believed symbolically looked back at the previous year and forward to the new year. The Romans would make promises to Janus of good behavior in the new year. Early Christians used the first day of the new year to reflect back on their past mistakes and resolving to do better. Today our resolutions are less religious in nature and more along the line of self improvement.

Typically our resolutions focus on health or career. We want to be better than we were last year. It’s so easy to make resolutions but so hard to keep them. Why is that? There are many answers to that question. One thought is that the human brain is trained to make habits and creating habits require us to change our daily routines. Keeping promises to ourselves is hard, even Aristotle noticed that trend 2,000 years ago. Another thought is that when we make a resolution we don’t take into account how it is going to change our daily lives in order to keep it. Another thought is that we tend to make ourselves feel bad about ourselves with our resolutions. I personally think a lot of it has to do with the thoughts and beliefs we hold in our subconscious mind.

So how do you keep your New Year’s resolutions? Again there are differing thoughts about how to do this. One thought is to set goals with a specific timeline to achieve them. Writing your resolutions down on paper is a good strategy. The act of writing, especially by hand, creates a connection in our brain. Allowing your resolutions to be flexible also helps, two of the most important ways to keep your resolutions is to think about what might deter you from your resolutions and to visualize how good it feels to live your resolutions.

Visualizing is the key to success in everything. If you can see it and feel it, you can be it!
